Sunset Sail Saint Lucia: Everything You Need to Know

There are sunsets, and then there are Saint Lucia sunsets. When the sky turns amber and the twin Pitons are silhouetted against the horizon, you'll understand why this island is considered one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. A sunset sail is the single best way to experience that moment — and it's one of the most popular things to do in Soufrière for good reason.

Here's everything you need to know before you book.

What Is a Sunset Sail in Saint Lucia?

A sunset sail is a 2–3 hour boat trip departing in the late afternoon, timed to reach the best viewing position as the sun drops toward the horizon. Most trips depart from Soufrière or the Jalousie/Sugar Beach area, sailing south along the coast with the Pitons as your backdrop.

Depending on the operator, you'll typically enjoy:

  • Drinks on board — rum punch, local beer, soft drinks
  • Light snacks — fresh fruit, local bites
  • Swimming stop — a brief anchor in calm water for a swim
  • Piton views — the defining image of Saint Lucia, from the water

The mood is relaxed and social. It's a perfect experience for couples, families, and solo travellers alike.

How Much Does a Sunset Sail Cost in Saint Lucia?

Prices vary depending on the operator and what's included:

OptionPrice
Group sunset sail (shared boat)USD $80–120 per person
Private sunset sail (exclusive charter)USD $400–600+ per group
Discover Soufrière Sunset SailUSD $100 per person

Our USD $100 per person price includes drinks, snacks, a swimming stop, and the full Piton sunset experience. No hidden extras.

Private charters are available on request — ideal for proposals, anniversaries, or groups who want the boat to themselves.

What to Expect: A Typical Sunset Sail from Soufrière

Departure (around 4:00–4:30 PM)

You'll board from a jetty near Soufrière town or Sugar Beach. The crew will welcome you on board, introduce themselves, and get you settled with your first drink.

Sailing South (4:30–5:30 PM)

The boat heads south along the coast, passing beneath the dramatic faces of Gros Piton and Petit Piton. This is the golden hour for photography — the light is warm, the Pitons are enormous up close, and the water is a deep Caribbean blue.

Swimming Stop (5:30–6:00 PM)

The boat anchors in a calm bay for a 20–30 minute swim. The water is warm, clear, and refreshing after a day of sightseeing.

Sunset (around 6:00–6:30 PM)

The main event. The crew will position the boat for the best view as the sun sets over the Caribbean. Drinks flow, music plays softly, and the sky does the rest. It's genuinely one of those moments you'll remember for years.

Return (6:30–7:00 PM)

The boat heads back to the dock as dusk falls. You'll be back in Soufrière in time for dinner.

What to Bring on a Sunset Sail

  • Light layers — it can get breezy on the water after sunset
  • Swimwear — worn under your clothes for the swimming stop
  • Towel — a small quick-dry towel is ideal
  • Camera or phone — in a waterproof case or bag
  • Sunscreen — apply before boarding; the afternoon sun on the water is strong
  • Cash — for tips (the crew works hard and tips are appreciated)

Leave heavy bags and valuables at your accommodation.

Sunset Sail vs Daytime Catamaran Tour: Which Is Better?

Both are excellent — they're just different experiences:

Sunset SailDaytime Catamaran
Duration2–3 hours4–6 hours
SnorkellingBrief swim onlyFull snorkel stop
Piton viewsDramatic golden lightClear daylight views
AtmosphereRomantic, relaxedLively, social
Best forCouples, special occasionsFamilies, adventure seekers
PriceFrom $100ppFrom $90pp

If you're celebrating something special or want the most photogenic experience, the sunset sail wins. If you want a full day on the water with snorkelling, the daytime tour is the better value.

Best Time of Year for a Sunset Sail in Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia's sunsets are spectacular year-round, but the dry season (January–April) offers the clearest skies and calmest seas. The shoulder months of May and November–December are also excellent.

The wet season (June–October) brings afternoon showers, but these often clear by late afternoon — and a post-rain sunset in the Caribbean can be extraordinary. We monitor conditions daily and will reschedule if the weather is genuinely unsuitable.

Sunset times vary through the year:

  • January–February: ~6:00 PM
  • March–April: ~6:15 PM
  • May–August: ~6:30–6:45 PM
  • September–December: ~6:00–6:15 PM

We time departures to arrive at the best viewing position 30 minutes before sunset.
