The Complete Guide to Renting a Car in Saint Lucia
Everything you need to know before renting a car in Saint Lucia — from driving on the left to visitor permits, road conditions, and the best routes to explore.
The Complete Guide to Renting a Car in Saint Lucia
Renting a car in Saint Lucia is one of the best decisions you can make for your holiday. It gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace, stop at hidden beaches, and discover the real Saint Lucia beyond the resort gates. But there are a few things you should know before you get behind the wheel.
Do You Need a Visitor's Driving Permit?
Yes. All visitors to Saint Lucia must obtain a local visitor's driving permit to drive legally on the island. You cannot use your home country licence alone.
The good news is that the permit is straightforward to obtain. When you rent a car with us, we handle the paperwork for you. The permit costs USD $25 and is valid for the duration of your rental.
You will need to present your valid home country driving licence to obtain the permit.
Driving on the Left
Saint Lucia drives on the left-hand side of the road, following the British system. If you are from the US, Canada, or continental Europe, this will take a little getting used to — but most visitors adapt within the first hour or so.
Tips for adjusting:
- Take it slowly for the first 20–30 minutes
- Keep reminding yourself: "keep left, keep left"
- Roundabouts can be confusing — give way to traffic already on the roundabout
- Your passenger can help remind you, especially when pulling out of junctions
Road Conditions
Saint Lucia's roads range from excellent dual carriageways in the north to narrow, winding mountain roads in the south. The roads around Soufrière are particularly hilly and twisty — which is part of what makes driving here so scenic, but it does require care.
What to expect:
- Many roads are single-lane with passing places
- Speed bumps (locally called "sleeping policemen") are frequent, especially near schools and villages
- Potholes can appear without warning — drive at a pace that allows you to react
- Mountain roads have tight hairpin bends — use your horn on blind corners
Our recommendation: If you are planning to explore the south of the island, consider our Suzuki Jimny — its compact size and 4WD capability make it ideal for the hillier terrain around Soufrière.
Which Vehicle Should You Choose?
We offer three vehicles, each suited to different travel styles:
Toyota Vitz — $50/day
Perfect for couples or solo travellers who want an economical, easy-to-drive option for getting around town and visiting the main attractions. Fuel-efficient and easy to park.
Toyota Rush — $65/day
A comfortable SUV ideal for families or groups of up to 5. Higher ground clearance than the Vitz makes it better suited to rougher roads, and the extra space is great for luggage and beach gear.
Suzuki Jimny — $75/day
The adventurer's choice. Compact, nimble, and with proper 4WD, the Jimny handles Saint Lucia's mountain roads with ease. If you plan to explore off the beaten track or venture into the hills above Soufrière, this is your vehicle.
Fuel and Petrol Stations
Petrol stations are found in most towns. Fuel is sold in litres and priced in Eastern Caribbean Dollars (XCD). It is worth filling up whenever you pass a station in the south of the island, as stations are less frequent there.
Parking
Parking in Soufrière town is generally easy and free. At most beaches and attractions, there are informal parking areas where a small tip to the attendant is customary.
Insurance and Security Deposit
All our rentals include basic insurance. A refundable security deposit of USD $500 is required at the time of booking. This is fully returned upon safe return of the vehicle.
Minimum Rental Period
We require a minimum rental of 3 days. This reflects the reality that Saint Lucia rewards those who take their time — there is simply too much to see and do to rush it.
